Overview

For fit and experienced walkers this is the ultimate and most varied weeks walking in Cornwall. If you're a keen trail runner this could be the ultimate 100mile circular challenge!

21 easy miles, 44 moderate, 26 Strenuous and 12 Miles Severe!

Four very different sections of trail, completing two mid distance Cornwall Coast to Coast footpaths as well as two very different sections of the South West Coast Path and a crossing of the highest point in Cornwall. From desolate moorland tors, to unspoilt fishing villages, experience precipitous cliffs, hidden coves, dramatic tors, golden deserted beaches, inland forests, rivers valleys and high moorland. Walking on ancient drove roads, tracing smugglers trails and the paths of the revenue men who tried to find them, you will track the Pilgrimage routes of ancient saints and holy men one day and follow in the well worn boot steps of hardy cliff top miners the next.

Encounter ancient Celtic crosses, holy wells, old mine works and bronze age cliff top forts, passing locations that inspired and were adored by writers as diverse as Thomas Hardy, Tennyson, Daphne du Maurier and John Betjeman. For nature lovers keep aware as you pass through the habitat of seals, otters, deer, peregrine falcons, buzzards and if you are lucky puffins, adders and basking sharks.

A 7 day walking challenge or up to 11 days for those who want to undertake the route at a slower rate it’s not all toil on the trail. Recover with overnight stops at cosmopolitan Padstow, the idyllic fishing village at Port Isaac, infamous lonely Jamaica Inn as well as the historically rich and unique natural harbours at Fowey and Boscastle.

A superb weeks adventure for experienced walkers where the real prize is the variety and breadth of the walk - a trip through the many facets and faces of Cornwall old and New. Take the challenge and take a walking holiday that keeps you in the remote and real Cornwall away from the more crowded tourist trails whilst ensuring you make the occasional visit to some of its more stunning favourite locations.

Fowey to Looe

Leaving panoramic Fowey is always hard, but the tiny foot ferry to Polruan makes departure easier. Then follow a challenging, remote, wild coastline eastward with untouched beaches, hidden smuggling coves, and soaring cliffs—no houses in sight for over 8 miles. This is considered the best day on the South West Coast Path between Mevagissey and Plymouth, featuring the dramatic Pencarrow Head and the golden sands of Lantic Bay, which are protected from tourists except by foot access. Enjoy lunch exploring the maze of medieval lanes and cottages at the charming fishing harbour of Polperro, then an easier afternoon stroll through lush green coastline into bustling Looe Town, passing sheltered Talland Bay—perfect for a final afternoon cream tea before tomorrow’s inland walk.

Looe to Jamica Inn

Today is the longest day, with steady walking and climbing throughout. You begin by returning across Cornwall via the lush and peaceful West Looe Valley, where you might spot otters, deer, and bubbling rivers along forest tracks. This route reconnects with a youthful, gushing Fowey River as you journey toward the remote Bodmin Moor. Once on the open moorland, careful navigation guides you along an ancient drover’s route over Brown Gelly Tor’s summit and around the dark, eerie Dozmary Pool — famous as the legendary resting place of King Arthur’s sword, Excalibur. After a few more miles across the moor, the isolated and atmospheric Jamaica Inn appears, a perfect spot for your overnight stay in Cornwall’s wildest moorland.

Jamaica Inn to Boscastle

Your final day on the Smugglers Way takes you over Cornwall’s highest points and peaks, climbing five tors with some of the most spectacular panoramas in the West Country. The tough walking across the moor is rewarded by dramatic stone stack sculptures carved by the elements along exposed ridges. Descending from the tors, the route passes an abandoned WWII airport runway flanked by crumbling control towers and bunkers. Then you drop down to the coast, following remote bubbling tributaries of the surging Valency River. Following in Thomas Hardy’s footsteps, the last section leads you down his “leaf covered aisle” to the fascinating hamlet of Boscastle, with its unique fjord-like harbour, witchcraft museum, and wild Atlantic coastline. With your 100-mile journey complete, enjoy a well-earned refreshment in the Cobweb Inn as you reach the harbour, satisfied by a route that reveals unmatched variety in Cornish walking.

Getting There

How to reach your starting point

Travel by By Train

Train - Easiest options are the Mainline fast Trains from London and the Midlands which run regularly to Liskeard or Looe and you can start the walk from either location. Liskeard is less than 4 hours on the fast train from London and for Looe you change here for the stunning scenic branch line journey to Looe down the Looe Valley taking around 45 minutes.

If you want to stay in one of the smarter harbour towns then trains to Bodmin Parkway take 4 hours from where you can reach Padstow in an hour by bus. For Fowey the trainline runs close by at St Austell and Par stations and regular buses are around 20 minutes onto Fowey. We can advise on private transfers from the stations as well.

Travel Tip: Consider taking the train for a more sustainable journey
