Today’s walk combines the bustling maritime history of Plymouth with the peaceful rural landscapes of the South Devon Coast. After exploring Plymouth’s waterfront, iconic landmarks like the Mayflower Steps, and passing through the historic Barbican, the trail leads to quieter paths along gentle cliffs, beaches, and secluded coves. You’ll pass notable sites such as Mountbatten Point, Bovisand Fort, and Jennycliff before arriving in Wembury, a charming village within the Voluntary Marine Conservation Area. From here, you can either stay in Wembury or cross the Yealm River to the picturesque village of Noss Mayo for the night.

Today includes passes through historic sites like the Church of St Peter the Poor Fisherman, Gunrow signal station, and an isolated stretch at the Erme River, which can be waded at low tide or bypassed by inland routes. Continuing along, you’ll pass through Aymer Cove, a spot known for smuggling, and reach the striking Burgh Island, famous for its art deco hotel and Agatha Christie connections. Depending on the tide, you may cross the sands to the island, or take a sea tractor ride. The day concludes with a stop in Bigbury or Bantham, offering opportunities to relax by the beach.

Bigbury to Salcombe

Today's walk along the South West Coast Path offers a mix of challenges and rewards, with climbs and drops leading to Bolt Head, one of Devon's finest cliff walks. Salcombe to Torcross

Today's walk along the South Devon Coast offers a dramatic and rugged experience, starting with a ferry ride from Salcombe and heading into the "swine trail." The path, which takes you over ascents and descents, is defined by rocky outcrops like Pigs Nose, Ham Stone, and the impressive Gammon Head. You’ll pass by secluded coves, including the beautiful Maceley Cove, before reaching the southernmost point of Devon at Prawle Point, a prime birdwatching spot. The path then leads to Start Point, with its towering lighthouse and ancient geological formations. Further on, you'll encounter the haunting remains of Hallsands, a village lost to the sea in 1903 due to dredging, and end your day at Beesands or Torcross. The day’s walk provides stunning coastal views, fascinating history, and plenty of wildlife, including seals and seabirds.

Torcross to Dartmouth

This morning's walk provides a much-needed respite from the cliffs with a peaceful stretch along the long, flat beach of Slapton Ley Nature Reserve. Devon’s largest natural lake, Slapton Ley is a haven for birdwatchers, home to a diverse range of wildlife including ducks, swans, otters, and even freshwater eels. The coastal path follows the "line," a shingle bar that separates the lake from the sea. Along the way, you'll pass a somber war memorial, marking the evacuation of locals during WWII for D-Day preparations. The path continues through high pastures and a descent through woodland to Blackpool Sands, a Blue Flag beach offering a great spot for lunch and relaxation. Heading inland, you pass through the village of Stoke Fleming, before descending to Sugary Cove and finally reaching the charming town of Dartmouth. With its medieval harbor, dramatic castles, and stunning views, Dartmouth offers a picturesque and tranquil stop for the night.

On your final day, you take a ferry across the River Dart before climbing through the stunning Monterey Pines of Warren Woods to Froward Point, where you can explore the remnants of coastal defence batteries. The path continues past the beautiful Coleton Fishacre gardens, then undulates along the cliffs toward Sharkham Point with breathtaking views of Torbay. After rounding St. Mary's Bay, a final surprise awaits at Berry Head Country Park, a site rich in flora, fauna, and military history, with a Napoleonic fort and a lighthouse perched above the cliffs. Your adventure concludes with a descent into Brixham's bustling harbour, marking the end of your South West Coast Path journey.

How to reach your starting point

Travel by By Train

Togankomst - Der kører hurtige direkte tog fra London, Midlands og Nordengland til Plymouth Station - De hurtigste tog fra London tager kun 3 timer. Togafgang - Fra Brixham tager regelmæssige busser 20 minutter til Paignton Station eller 50 minutter til Torquay. Tog kører tilbage til London Paddington fra Paignton (de fleste skifter i Exeter) og tager 3 timer og 20 minutter ELLER en tilsvarende tid fra Torquay med skift i Newton Abbot Station undervejs.
