Options de 5 à 9 jours incluant l'île de Portland et les options du sentier Ridgeway de l'intérieur du Dorset Classé au patrimoine mondial en 2001, le sentier de la côte jurassique, qui traverse le Dorset, est tout simplement unique. C'est le seul endroit de la planète où, en quelques jours de marche sur la côte, vous traverserez quelques millions d'années de l'histoire de la terre. Le sentier retrace l'histoire fascinante de déserts, de lagunes et de forêts marécageuses disparus depuis longtemps. Une terre de dinosaures, révélée par les glissements de terrain et l'érosion côtière spectaculaire d'aujourd'hui. La meilleure façon de découvrir tout cela est de le faire à pied. Il faut s'attendre à des contreforts calcaires vertigineux et à des falaises de grès multicolores, à des pinacles de craie d'un blanc étincelant et à des strates rocheuses plissées et tapissées de fossiles. Le paysage est complété par des rencontres avec des baies azur scintillantes, des grottes spectaculaires, d'immenses arches rocheuses et des criques de sable doux, qui font partie du décor toujours changeant et époustouflant de l'océan lui-même. Sur un sentier aux montées et descentes sinueuses, des falaises vertigineuses aux petites criques parfaites, c'est tout simplement le paradis des randonneurs. Les promontoires spectaculaires et isolés offrent la possibilité d'apercevoir des faucons pèlerins, des dauphins, des cerfs et des crécerelles, tandis que les vallées suspendues et les petites baies cachées révèlent des tapis de fleurs sauvages rares, d'orchidées, de papillons et d'oiseaux à foison. Le long du sentier côtier du Dorset, suivez les traces des pirates, des contrebandiers, des carriers et des collectionneurs de fossiles, et découvrez la riche histoire de ces activités et de ces escapades tout au long de vos vacances à pied. Les randonneurs passeront la nuit dans des lieux très variés, des impressionnantes villes royales de l'époque de la Régence aux petits ports côtiers tranquilles, en passant par les anciens villages ruraux, ce qui donne à cette section du sentier côtier du Sud-Ouest une véritable impression de vieille Angleterre passée... mais pas complètement perdue. Pourquoi ce tronçon est-il si spécial pour le randonneur ? Il faut savoir qu'il y a des sections difficiles, des zones isolées et des sections à accès restreint pour l'armée, mais pour ceux qui relèvent le défi, c'est le contraste pur du paysage que seuls les marcheurs peuvent trouver. Chaque jour entre Lyme Regis et Poole présente un environnement et un terrain de marche différents, de la lagune intérieure aux sommets couverts d'ajoncs. En chemin, les folies, les villages fantômes, les forts au sommet des collines et les mines abandonnées vous offrent une promenade qui, à chaque tournant, a quelque chose de nouveau, de surréaliste ou de surprenant à offrir - et puis, bien sûr, il y a les fossiles...

Lyme Regis to West Bay

Today's journey begins with a fascinating introduction to the dynamic coastline, passing through the remains of Europe's largest coastal mudslide before heading inland over Black Ven cliffs. After an early stop in Charmouth, famed for its fossil hunting, you ascend the challenging Golden Cap, the highest point on the South West Coast Path between Lands End and Poole. The ascent leads to breathtaking views from the summit, and after descending through woods and pastures, you'll arrive at Seatown, where you can celebrate your achievement at The Anchor Inn. The path continues with smaller climbs past Ridge Cliff, Thorncombe Beacon, and the intriguing World War II "Dragons Teeth" at Eypes Mouth. The day ends in West Bay, with its historic harbour and scenic views of Chesil Ridge, offering a perfect spot to rest before your next leg of the journey.

Today's walk offers a striking contrast of landscapes as you leave the rolling hills and cliffs of Lyme Regis behind, transitioning to the compact sandstone faces leading towards the famous Chesil Beach. After a final climb over East Cliff, you cross the River Bride and pass through the charming village of Burton Bradstock, before continuing along the Jurassic Coast Path. Chesil Bank, a unique 17-mile pebble ridge, becomes the focal point, with its ever-changing stones and scientific significance. As you traverse the beach, you’ll encounter wildlife, including dolphins and peregrine falcons, before reaching the serene lagoon at Burton Mere. After a few miles along the pebbles, you’ll reach West Bexington, where you can choose to head inland via the South Dorset Ridgeway or continue along the coast to the village of Abbotsbury. This idyllic stop offers stunning views over Chesil Bank and the Fleet, making for a memorable end to the day.

The Isle of Portland offers a unique and fascinating detour on the South West Coast Path, showcasing rugged landscapes and historical landmarks. Starting from the old railway causeway, you pass through abandoned quarries that supplied Portland Stone to iconic buildings worldwide. The path winds along dramatic cliffs with panoramic views of Chesil Beach and Lyme Regis Bay, leading you to Portland Bill, the most southerly point of the Dorset Coast, where three lighthouses guard the treacherous Portland Race. At Pulpit Rock, daring adventurers can climb to the rock platform for breathtaking vistas, while others can visit the Modern Lighthouse for a view that stretches back to Devon. This section of the South West Coast Path begins with a climb to St Aldhelm’s Head, offering stunning views back to Portland and as far as the Isle of Wight. The walk passes historical sites like the 12th-century St Aldhelm’s Chapel and remote quarries, such as Winspit, with poignant landmarks like a mass grave from the wreck of the Halsewell. The route then leads through Durlston Country Park, home to the Tilly Whim Caves and the impressive Victorian globe at Durlston Head, before descending into Swanage with its Victorian pier. After exploring Swanage, the path continues to Ballard Down, home to rare butterflies and flowers, and reaches the famous chalk stacks of Old Harry. The final stretch takes you through Studland and its Nature Reserve, ending with a serene walk on sandy beaches, finishing at South Haven Point and the ferry to Poole or Bournemouth, marking the end of your Dorset Coast adventure.

Travel by By Train

Arrivée en train - Des trains directs rapides relient la gare de Londres Waterloo à Axminster en 2 heures et 43 minutes. De là, des bus réguliers vous conduisent à Lyme Regis en 20 minutes (nous pouvons également vous conseiller sur les transferts). Départ en train - Des trains directs relient Poole à Londres en 2 heures et 15 minutes. Vous pouvez également partir de Bournemouth, située à proximité, pour rejoindre Londres. Le trajet dure un peu moins de 2 heures si vous préférez passer votre dernière nuit là-bas. Weymouth est un bon point d'arrivée et de départ à mi-chemin, avec des trains directs vers Londres en 2 heures et 45 minutes.
